Physicians Recommend All Children, Ages 9-11, be Screen for Cholesterol
While cardiovascular disease is rare in children, risk factors present in childhood can greatly increase the likelihood a child will develop heart disease as an adult. In response, new guidelines sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) will give health care providers an integrated road map to address all the major cardiovascular risk factors as part of regular well-child visits.

American Academy of Pediatrics Statement on HPV Vaccine
"The American Academy of Pediatrics would like to correct false statements made in the Republican presidential campaign that HPV vaccine is dangerous and can cause mental retardation. There is absolutely no scientific validity to this statement. Since the vaccine has been introduced, more than 35 million doses have been administered, and it has an excellent safety record.

Proponents Educate Lawmakers on Medical Home Concept
Around since at least the 1960s, medical homes for children certainly aren’t a new concept, Dr. Lawrence Reynolds told a group of lawmakers at an informational breakfast here Thursday.
“It’s as developed as any idea with merit can be developed,” said Reynolds, a Flint pediatrician and president of the Michigan chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

AAP Joins Call for Heightened Pertussis Vaccination
The American Academy of Pediatrics, together with eight nursing, pediatric and physician organizations, is urging health care providers nationwide to encourage patients who have any contact with newborns and infants to get vaccinated for pertussis to stem a nationwide outbreak, including several groups that previously had not been recommended for the vaccine.
