Child Abuse, Findings in Infants and Toddlers
Speaker: Sarah Brown, DO
Many infants and toddlers with serious abusive injuries have a history of less serious injuries in locations and patterns that are concerning for abuse ("sentinel injuries"). Studies report about 1/3 of children with serious abusive injuries had prior medical care where the abuse was not recognized. Detecting sentinel injuries and responding appropriately is an opportunity to prevent additional harm to patients.
Motivate recognition of and response to sentinel injuries. Understand the importance of a thorough evaluation for child abuse, including what medical testing is indicated by age and circumstance. Increase adherence to recommended clinical pathways.
Learning Objectives:
Recognize "sentinel injuries" as potential indicators of abuse.
Increase comfort in discussing abuse work-up with families.
Outline recommended abuse work-up by age and circumstances.
