The Febrile Infant: What’s New in Management

Speaker: Megan Sikkema, DO

It has been traditional practice to automatically admit febrile young infants to the hospital with an extensive workup. With the release of the newest guidelines, we now have room to keep some of these infants out of the hospital and minimize medical intervention.

We will discuss the 2021 AAP Clinical Practice guideline: Evaluation and Management of Well-Appearing Febrile Infants 8-60 days Old and review case presentations related to these guidelines.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the new guidelines related to evaluation and managment of the young, febrile infant.

  • Demonstrate the ability to integrate this new evidence into clinical practice.

  • Gain the confidence to observe these infants without intervention when medically appropriate.
