Small Business Help During COVID-19

Many pediatric practices are seeing declines in patient visits. The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act can help small practices in this time of need.

The AAP has developed a website to inform pediatric practices on key programs that could be of support. Visit that website here by clicking here.

The Small Business Administration has provided resources on the Paycheck Protection Program.

Michigan Among States with Diagnosed Caronavirus Cases

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that Michigan has joined the states that have confirmed cases of Coronavirus diagnosed within its borders.

The Governor was joined by the state's chief medical executive, Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, who said in a televised press conference that the two "presumed positive" cases include one from Oakland County and one from Wayne County.

The Oakland County female had a history of international travel, and the Wayne County male had a history of domestic travel, Khaldun said. Both were described as middle-aged. Both are hospitalized, and Khaldun would not further describe their current conditions. The Wayne County patient is under isolation.

The Governor also declared a state of emergency via executive order. The Governor again urged people to take measures to slow the spread of the virus in Michigan by practicing hand washing, limiting face-touching, and replacing handshakes with elbow and fist bumps

How are pediatricans in other states responding?

Yesterday, Anytime Pediatrics held a webinar that reviewed response to Covid-19 using virtual care. Please be aware that as the situation evolves recommendations could change. Office management strategies start at the 34:10 mark.

Planning Considerations

As this pandemic has spread into Michigan there are items that every office should take into consideration if you have not done so already.

For patients

•If you have a Telemedicine option (or virtual visit, patient portal, etc.) get as many patients registered in advance as possible

•Provide upfront education and communication; have a “go to” site to refer patients

•Share office plan in advance: Let patients know what you want them to do. Who should stay home/ Who should be calling you/who should have a virtual visit?

•Use communication tools (website, social media telephone hold messages, after hours messages)

•Give a clear “CONTACT US FIRST” message (e.g. rather than walk-ins, urgent care, etc.). At this point the message is to stay home if immediate care is not needed for illnesses.

•Screen all patients with a travel and exposure history

•Utilize phone triage in a timely fashion and patient portals

•Virtual visits: can screen for signs of respiratory distress and help identify patients who are not candidates for home care; can also be used for face-to-face education and reassurance

For the office

•Consider waiting room set up and restructuring for sick and well areas

•Consider designating rooms for sick and well visits

•Consider designated times of the day for sick and well visits

•If making changes, clearly communicate to patients (messaging and signage) why you are making these changes

•Consider cleaning office and rooms more often and who is responsible

•Ordering supplies and list of what is needed

For Providers

•Must be up-to-date on current information (which is frequently changing): Follow CDC website and state or local health department

•Use a daily huddle with staff to review management if patient has a positive travel/exposure screen (next steps, how to communicate, which exam room, which masks and PPE, cleaning procedures)

•Have the plan posted in the office

•Be accessible source of information to staff

•Emphasis the importance of common sense measures (hand hygiene)

•Emphasize importance of not coming to work sick

The MIAAP is working to stay on top of this changing situation. We will continue to update members as information becomes available. For more information please see the web pages below.
