Dr. Layla Mohammed is a general pediatrician at Michigan medicine and a clinical assistant professor at the University of Michigan. She graduated from the University of Baghdad medical school and completed her residency at the Henry Ford pediatric residency program in 2017 and an academic general pediatrics fellowship at the University of Michigan in 2001.

Dr. Abeba Berhane is originally from Grand Rapids, MI, where she currently practices at Helen DeVos Children’s Outpatient Clinic. She completed her undergraduate work at University of Michigan. She received a Bachelor of Science with Distinction in Anthropology. Dr. Berhane completed medical school at University of Michigan with a Distinction in Research in 2010. Her residency training was at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. After residency, she joined Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital/Spectrum Health System in 2013. She is also an Assistant Professor with Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. On the Grand Rapids campus for MSU, she is the Pediatric Clerkship Director for third-year medical students.

Alana Slavin, MSc is a third year medical student at the University of Michigan Medical School. She plans to be physician who advocates for immigrant and refugee populations.

Kate Orringer is a senior at Williams College studying Political Science, Environmental Studies, and Leadership Studies.

Dr. Kelly Orringer is a primary care pediatrician in Ann Arbor and a clinical faculty member at Michigan Medicine. She leads the health system’s migrant farmworker outreach clinic and is the national health liaison for migrant/seasonal Head Start.

Christopher Whitlock is a second year medical student at University of Michigan Medical School from Atlanta, GA interested in primary care and passionate about reducing health care disparities in immigrant and refugee communities. He is a current member of the University of Michigan Asylum Collaborative and has volunteered as an English tutor for New American Pathways in Atlanta, GA.

Megan Purdy is currently a second year medical student at University of Michigan Medical School. She first became interested in immigrant and refugee health as an English as a Second Language tutor for immigrants and refugees in college. Her interest was furthered as a member of the University of Michigan Asylum Collaborative executive board and looks forward to implementing the Immigrant and Refugee Toolkit to further improve care for these communities.

Dr. Justin Triemstra is an Academic General Pediatrician who practices adolescent and young adult medicine at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, Spectrum Health. He is also an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Human Development at Michigan State University.

Ruth Bishop is a third year medical student at the University of Michigan Medical School. She is insterested in pursuing a career in primary care with a mission to improve healthcare access to vulnerable patient populations, most especially people who are undocumented or experiencing homelessness.

Jessica Quinn is currently a third year medical student at University of Michigan Medical School. She plans to pursue a career in family medicine and work with underserved communities, and hopes to expand access to resources for vulnerable populations.
