Michal Ruprecht, M.D. Candidate

Michal Ruprecht (he/him) is a medical student at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Michal serves on the MIAAP Board as a Resident Representative. He is a global health researcher, an award-winning health journalist, and the son of immigrants. His research explores interventions rooted in equity and inclusion to drive positive change in underserved communities. He works with Deborah A. Ellis, PhD on a novel mHealth intervention to improve health outcomes in Black youth with type 1 diabetes. He presented research on a novel health equity curriculum with the Equity and Justice Lab, led by Ijeoma Nnodim Opara, MD, FAAP, FAIM, at the 2023 MIAAP Annual Conference, where he was the recipient of the MIAAP Travel Grant and served as the conference intern. Michal also investigates the intersection of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and traumatic brain injury in pediatric patients with Alcy R. Torres, MD, FAAP at the Boston Medical Center Pediatric Brain Injury Center. Additionally, he is a global health fellow at the Henry Ford Health Global Health Initiative.

Michal is interested in how disruptive medical journalism improves scientific and medical understanding. He currently edits and fact-checks content for ABC News as a member of the company's Medical Unit. He also contributes to MedPage Today and serves on their Editorial Advisory Board. He previously interned at ABC News, MedPage Today, and the American Public Health Association. Prior to that, he was a beat reporter, assistant editor, and investigative reporter for The Michigan Daily, the University of Michigan's independent daily student newspaper.

Michal graduated with honors and a B.S. in neuroscience from the University of Michigan in 2022, where he leveraged community action and social change to partner with individuals affected by the Flint water crisis. He wrote his senior thesis on a membrane protein and created three ceramic sculptures of the channel. He serves on the Society of Professional Journalists' Student Advisory Board and Youth Advisory Board of Riley's Way Foundation.

Outside of work, Michal is passionate about brewing jun kombucha, sculptural ceramics in the realm of BioArt, contemporary literary fiction, vinyasa yoga, international half marathons, and open water swimming.
